FOUNTAINHEAD
A giant copper boulder suddenly emerged into our world.
As people gathered around this mystical object, pondering its origin, water sprung from the rock and cascaded down its surface. And so they drank. They washed themselves.
Touching copper water is ritual of purification, for the copper chemically cleanse it of contaminants – physical, emotional, spiritual.
This is Marta Moskova’s homage to the meditative journey of creation, to shaping and forming the rough universe through concentrated effort.
Not by thinking but by doing.
Fountainhead is a reference to the way water springs from the rocks in the mountains. It aims to encapsulate the feeling we get when we look at and listen to a spring, and to bring it into spaces where natural springs aren’t present - the city square, the hospital, the elderly home.
The artwork leans heavily on the healing power of water as a driving force to inspire introspection and connection between humans.
Stream state
The water spring is a symbol of life, a new beginning, purification, rebirth. The poetry of the work also lies in the copper’s purifying properties which have been used by humans fo centuries. The copper ions chemically cleanse the water that is in contact with them, making the water of this fountain as pure as it can be.
Hammered on rocks
This object was created from sheets of copper, laid and hammered on rocks in the Bulgarian mountains in order to take the imprint of their texture. It is then moulded and blowtorched into shape, its irridescent surface bearing traces of its history.
Temple of the Rock
During the 7 months spent working on this piece, Marta established a close relationship with the rock.
Her belief is that creating such a piece is only possible through giving up control and giving in to the greater power which is creation; allowing the piece to form itself like a self-completing puzzle. Letting go of the need to constantly control the outcome leads the artist to an ultimate state of creative liberation.
