THE INSECT
SCRAPYARD

The extinction of insects is a pressing issue today due to the global decline in their populations as a result of climate change, intensive agriculture, and pollution. This could lead to an ecological crisis, threatening plant pollination, the decomposition of organic matter, natural pest control, and the food chains that many species rely on. Although we may not yet realize it, such a catastrophe could result in the destruction of ecosystems and, consequently, endanger human existence on Earth.

Set in a speculative future where insects have become extinct,
this project explores  scenario in which humanity must deal with the consequences.

Insect Scrapyard: Insect Portraits
copper, brass, steel

Since the disappearance of insect species, humans were forced to replace them with robots built in their image and likeness, intended to take over their vital functions. The insect scrapyard is a facility that allows people to choose from a collection of body parts and assemble their own insects, tailored to their needs—whether for pollination, air or water purification, pest control, and more. Nuts and bolts connect the wings, moveable limbs, dangerous stingers, and other pieces, all made of copper and brass.

This project offers a playful take on a serious matter.

The final presentation of this work is an installation featuring a hanging composition of five insect-robots, each assigned its own function based on humanity's needs.

The Insect Scrapyard invites you to play and explore the concept of what an insect could be, while at  the same time sending a message about the danger humanity poses to the  survival of essential species and ecosystems.
